DAVENPORT — Ruth F. Hamann, 95, of Davenport, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf. Services in celebration of her long life will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady St., Davenport, with the Rev. Ron Huber officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the memorial fund at St. Paul Lutheran Church, of which she was a long-time member. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting her family with arrangements.
Ruth was born in 1917 in rural Scott County, to Frank and Lena Meyer. She married Elmer J. Hamann on Dec. 16, 1936, in Davenport. He preceded her in death May 2, 2001. She and her husband farmed near Eldridge. She was an active partner in the farm operation, contributing to the daily tasks and management. During their retirement years, they enjoyed both domestic and foreign travel, exploring different cultures and customs. Ruth and Elmer also were dedicated volunteer cooks at Camp Shalom in Maquoketa. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge with her friends for many years. She cherished her family, her friends, and enjoyed entertaining in her home. She was a life-long learner in achieving new skills with sewing, china painting, gardening, growing violets and baking, and she believed in sharing the results with others. Her church and community were extremely important to her and she instilled that commitment in others. Above all, she loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.
Because Ruth felt "there is more to life than just living" and "you have to give back to other people," she was dedicated to being involved in community and church activities. She became a St. Paul Befriender, Sunday School teacher, president of the St. Paul WELCA, 4-H leader in both Sheridan and Lincoln townships, Genesis Hospital volunteer for 30 years, Salvation Army meal provider, and an active member of Farm Bureau Women. Other memberships included the Mississippi River Bend Porcelain Decorators, Quad-Cities African Violet Society, P.E.O. Chapter FJ, Gyrettes, and Merit Mothers of Iowa.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Jack Albrecht of Eldridge, and Wynne and David Schafer of Davenport; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Sandra Hamann of Greenville, S.C.; grandchildren, Malinda Hamann and Bill Lee, Sara Albrecht, Andy and Gail Albrecht, Lara and Chris Wannemacher; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Alberta and William Blanche, and sisters-in-law, Ruth Baetke, Phyllis Hamann and Helen Hamann.
