Enlisted as a private in Company A, 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, July 31, 1862, for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Shoemaker. Promoted to corporal, May 23, 1863; reduced to private, July 1, 1863.
Admitted to the U.S. General Army Hospital at Cleveland, OH, March 9, 1865 on furlough from U.S. General Hospital at Madison, IN. Mustered out May 30, 1865, at Cleveland, OH by Order of the U.S. War Department.

He is buried in Section 4, Lot 46, Grave 33 with 43 other Civil War veterans on the monument of the George H. Thomas G.A.R. Post 5, Department of IL, erected in 1894. A stipulation of Post 5 stated that no individual headstones, military or civilian, could ever be placed in the lot so Thomas will never have a headstone.

His name is on Panel #13 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio.
