Of Shelbyville
Dan's joy of life came from discovery, he wanted to know a little about everything. Dan died Monday, December 16, 2002 at home. When you meet Dan, you were only a stranger for minutes, Dan loved people and was always willing to talk and listen, to anyone he meet. Dan's life began on June 1, 1937 in New York City, the son of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Gilkey) Thomas. Dan grew up on the north shore of Chicago; he lived for a time in Virginia while his father served in the Navy during WW II. In the late 1960's he married and had two children, a daughter Kyle A. (Richard) Thomas Kick of Barrington, IL, and a son, Carson H. (Tria) Thomas of Brookfield, Wisconsin. On February 4, 1983 he married Wendy S. Seely, and took another son, S. Breadon Graves of Golden, Colorado. Dan is also survived by his grandchildren, Hale Thomas, Teagan and MacKenzie Kick; a brother, William L. Thomas of Sanibel Island, Florida. Dan attended high school in Chicago and the Taft Prep School on the east coast. Dan served in the US Army, and went on to graduate from Michigan State University. Dan worked as a financial advisory and money manager for Merrill Lynch and a financial planner for the Stokes and Stocking Co. He was active with people his entire life, including sitting on the boards of the Terra Museum and the Winnetka Youth Organization in Illinois. Dan also was involved with Healing the Children, an organization flying supplies to needy children in South America. Dan enjoyed many activities especially water sports, he loved to sail, ski, and flying small airplanes. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 18, 2002 at the Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Memorial contribution may be made to "Healing the Children" or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
