- FORT MILL - Funeral Services for Mary Elizabeth Wright, 202 West Elliott Street, Fort Mill, who died from servere burns Wednesday in York General Hospital, were conducted Friday at 4 p.m. from First Baptist Church in Fort Mill, by Rev. B.C. Tschudy and Rev. J.F. Lupo. Burial was in Unity Cemetery.
- Active pallbearers included James H. Wright, George Wayne Wright, Leo Nichols, Lennin Nichols, Verlon Nichols, and Jasper Ash.

- Flash of flame claims life of Fort Mill child
- Fort Mill - Death claimed a Fort Mill child on her second birthday Wednesday, ending an anguished vigil maintained by her family since a freak flash of flame struck the girl down in the utility room of her home here.
Mary Elizabeth Wright, daughter of Springs Mills employee Carl L. Wright and Ruth Nichols Wright, was fatally burned at home last Monday. No one saw the accident, but her grief stricken father tried to reconstruct the bizarre and deadly happenstance today.
- He said his light blonde daughter big for her age was playing in the utility room with the family lawn mower. Somehow or another, she spilled gasoline on her clothing. Beside her in the utility room, the hot water heater's blue pilot light flicked at the bottom of the tank.
In a flash, the gasoline fumes from her dress ignited. Her body was 70 per cent covered with servere third degree burns.
- Mary Elizabeth was rushed to York General Hospital where she lingered until death.
- The family are members of the First Baptist Church of Fort Mill.
- Funeral services will be held at 4 pm. Friday at the church with Rev. B. C. Tschudy, her pastor, and Dr. J. F. Lupo, officiating. Burial will be in Unity Cemetery here.
The body will be taken to the home Friday morning and will remain there until 3 pm. when it will be taken to the church for services.
- In addiction to the parents, survivors included two brothers, Carl Richard and James Edward Wright, both of the home; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Wright of Fort Mill; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Nichols of Fort Mill; great grandmother, Mrs. Inez Ramsey of Gastonia, N. C.; and great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Nichols of Rock Hill.

- Tragic Death Of Little Girl Saddens People of Fort Mill.
- A power lawn mower, a can of gasoline and a gas water heater were the ingredients that brought death last week to blonde, two-year-old Mary Elizabeth Wright, daughter of Carl L. Wright of Fort Mill.
- The little girl had been horribly burned in a flash fire in the utility room of the Wright home nine days before she succumbed. There were no Witnesses to the heart-rending tragedy, but Mary Elizabeth's parents believed it happened like this:
- The industrious little girl was at play in the utility room. She decided to "mow the lawn" as she had seen her father do many times. But firstshe had to put gas in the mower. She got the can but spilled some of its contents on the mower and her dress. The fumes quickly spread to the pilot light of the heater nearby and ignited. In a flash her dress was ablaze. Before she could be reached, 70 percent of her body was covered with deep, third-degree burns.
- She was rushed to York General Hospital where she lingered in critical condition until last Wednesday. Ironically and tragically, she succumed on her second birthday.
- Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the First Baptist Church, of which the Wrights are members. Conducting the rites were the Rev. B.C. Tschudy, pastor; and Dr. J.F. Lupo. Burial was in Unity Cemetery.
