Memorial to the many who lost their lives during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. The storm began in the South Atlantic Ocean in late August 2005 and built into a category 3 hurricane as it crossed southern Florida, killing at least ten persons. The hurricane then entered into the Gulf of Mexico, where he built up to a category 5 hurricane, before coming ashore the evening of August 28, just east of New Orleans, Louisiana. Both New Orleans and the nearby city of Biloxi, Mississippi were hard hit by the storm. Levies in New Orleans broke in three places, and the entire city was flooded. The storm proceeded north and east, going eventually as a heavy rainstorm into Pennsylvania and New York before disappearing. Rescue operations continued for several days after coming ashore in Louisiana and Mississippi. The city of New Orleans was so badly hit that its mayor requested the city to be completely evacuated until the water can be drained out of the city. Several weeks were required to remove the water from New Orleans. Just prior to the storm coming ashore, President Bush declared both Louisiana and Mississippi as disaster areas, and ordered federal assistance for both states. The day before the hurricane came ashore, the mayor of New Orleans ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city, but tens of thousands did not, or could not, leave. Billions of dollars in disaster relief were ok'd by the Federal Government, and Congress agreed to substantial additional funding. Many thousands of active duty and National Guard soldiers were mobilized to help with the disaster.
