James Oleskevich was born in Minsk Russia and was the oldest of 5 boys and 1 girl. Around the time of the Russian-Japanese War, James left Russia and toured the world with his father. He eventually came Boston MA before moving to Chicago IL. After spending a short time in Chicago he moved to Silverton Colorado and worked in the mines. When the mines were shut down in Silverton he continued to work as miner in Trinidad and Grand Junction.

James changed his last name to Olesky around the time of WWII. He and his wife Mary had 10 children. Only 7 of the children survived past infancy, two dieing at birth and one died as an infant after contracting the flu.

James and Mary moved to Denver where they watched their grandchildren grow up.
