Death: Nov. 4, 1933

Mrs. John Welch

Mary Hasting was born in Warren county, Iowa, August 18, 1851 [1852], and departed this life Nov. 4, 1933, aged 81 years, 2 months and 17 days. She passed away at Salem Hospital in Oregon. Burial took place in Aurora, Oregon. [Unfortunately it didn't. Her cremated remains were not buried.]

The deceased was united in marriage to John Welch on March 29, 1877. To this union were born two sons, Henry and Chick both of Oregon. Her companion, John Welch, departed this life in their home in Oregon on January 4, 1932. Mrs. Welch is survived by her two sons, 18 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren, one brother, Ira Hasting of Warren county, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Lola Marquis of Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. Welch's home was in Iowa until several years ago when they went to Idaho and Oregon to reside. They have many relatives and friends around here who deeply sympathize with the bereaved family.

-- Nov 1933, Indianola, Iowa?

A book by David Maisel and a documentary by Ondi Timoner & Robert James, both entitled "Library of Dust" also provide more information.

Mary was born in August 1852 in Illinois to Joseph Hastings and Catharine Michael. Her parents were Ohio natives. Mary had 10 siblings. The family farmed in Iowa. She was living with her parents during the 1860 & 1870 census.

On 3/29/1877 she married John Henry Welch and they had 2 children, Henry (about 1877-1940) and William (1880-1960). Mary and John farmed in Clarke County, Iowa until after 1900.

In Iowa, her father died in 1907 and her mother passed away in 1908. During the time of the 1910 & 1920 censuses John and Mary were living in Idaho. By the time of the 1930 census they were retired in the Barlow/Aurora area in Oregon's Willamette Valley.

John died on 1/4/1932 and then on 9/27/1932 Mary was admitted to the "Oregon State Hospital for the Insane" in Salem, Marion County, Oregon. Her mental state was described as "senile psychosis." She died at the state hospital on 11/4/1933.

Mary's cremated remains were never taken after her death and are still available at the Oregon State Hospital to anyone who is related. More information about how to claim the ashes is available at the Oregon State Hospital.

I hope that a descendant will see to it that her ashes are buried with her husband, despite an 80-year wait.
