Bertus married Olive Ann Hess October 30, 1949. Immediately after marriage, Bertus and Olive moved to the "Poor Farm". Bertus carried his bride over the threshold right into the Poor House; there they lived happily for 34 years then moved to Hildreth in November 1983."
Bertus was baptized and confirmed at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Hildreth, Nebraska.
