General Federation of Women's Clubs, Person Record

Rebecca Douglas Lowe (Mrs. William Bell Lowe) was born August 1844 in LaGrange, Georgia. After her marriage to William Lowe, she resided in Atlanta. She became involved in club life in November 1895 when the Council of the General Federation of Women's Clubs met in Atlanta at the Southern States Cotton Exposition. From this, the Atlanta Woman's Club was formed and Lowe was elected its leader. In 1896, Lowe invited 17 other women's clubs to meet and form the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs. She became state federation president in 1897.

At the 1898 GFWC Convention in Denver, Colorado, Lowe was elected GFWC President. At the convention, the Club Woman was made the official publication of the Federation. During Lowe's term, GFWC secured a national charter and worked for educational reform and labor laws.

After the death of her husband William Bell Lowe, Rebecca Douglas Lowe married New York magazine editor George Gunton in 1904. A condensation of her 1902 GFWC Biennial convention address appeared in Gunton's Magazine in July 1902.

(The record goes on to say she died in Atlanta, which is incorrect.)

---
The scandal surrounding Rebecca and George's marriage (as he had been already married), resulted in them leaving public life. The marriage ended in divorce in 1915. She died August 6, 1918, in Virginia.

Excerpts from Cold Springs, NY paper, 1901

"Mrs Lowe Honored / Georgia Lady Appointed to Represent the Club Women of America at the Paris Exposition."

"Mrs. Lowe has been long known in the south as a wealthy and philanthropic woman. She has a handsome home in the aristocratic quarter of Atlanta, and there dispenses notable hospitality amid the most luxuriant surroundings.... Mrs. Lowe has crossed the meridian of life, but hse is still youthful in appearance, and though not a large woman has an imposing appearance and is an excellent and impressive speaker. She is of rather slight stature, her eyes are blue, and her brown hair is tinged with gray. She wears eyeglasses, dresses with elegance and taste and has the charming, easy manners that pertain to the ladies of the south..... Before her marriage, Mrs. Lowe was one of the most beautiful and popular Belles in the south. She has a son and a married daughter."

----

Her obituary lists her only as "mother of Baroness Rebecca Lowe Rosencrantz". Memorial# 32428600. This daughter was previously married to James W English, Jr., Memorial# 68412098, son of her father's business partner. They divorced before 1912, and she married Baron Marcus Rosenkrantz, Memorial# 32428599.
