Cling West, Cannon Countys oldest sheriff died Wednesday, August 30 at Stones River Hospital folllowing an extended illness. West served as sheriff for then two, two year terms from 1954 til 1958, he was a road builder, farmer and also served as Road Supervisor for the Cannon County Highway Department for 16 years. Mr. West was well known and respected throughout Cannon County serving as a School Board Member from the 8th District for 12 years. For more than 30 years, Mr. West served as director on the board of Middle Tennessee Natural Gas Utility District and was instrumental in developement of a natural gas line in Cannon County. He was a native of Cannon County and the son of the late Forrest West and Cennie Wilson West. A member of the Church of Christ, Mr. West was preceded in death by his wife, the late Lena Todd West and a daughter Dorothy Earles. Funeral services were held Friday, September 1 in the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home with Bro. Odell Powell officiating. Burial was in Leoni Cemetery with Woodbury Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Survivors include two sons, W. C. West of Morrison and Jack D. West of Woodbury; three daughters, Helen Alexander of Readyville, Wavil Bush of Livonia, MI. and Ruth Pugh of Liberty; a brother, Morgan West of Battle Creek, MI.; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
