Jazz Musician. He was born in Lawrence County, South Carolina, and moved to Detroit, Michigan, as a child. He attended Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Northwestern High School, where he'd been involved in music playing the tuba and the bass fiddle. He later joined various Detroit area bands, and played local clubs as well as other venues around the country. Playing the bass fiddle, he toured with such legendary jazz artists as Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Ray Charles. He also appeared on the popular Ed Sullivan television show in 1954 with saxophonist Louie Jordan. He was married to his wife of 62 years, Helen. In his later years, he also taught music at the Detroit Center for Creative Studies.
