OBIT:

Don McKenzie, 84, of Yakima, formerly of Kittitas County, died Wednesday in Yakima. He was born December 11, 1906 at Quincy, the son of Charles S. and Elvina (DeVine) McKenzie.

He received his early education in Grant and Kittitas County public schools and was graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1925. He was graduated from Ellensburg Normal School in 1930. He also studied at the University of Washington. He returned to Central Washington College of Education for a bachelor's degree in 1939 and his master's in 1955.

He and Jean E. McMurray were married June 27, 1934 in Aberdeen. He was a teacher and public school administrator for 40 years. He taught and was principal in a Tieton school, then in Yakima where he served as a teacher and principal until retirement. He was principal of Garfield School in Yakima from 1941 to 1952 and then moved as principal to Washington Junior High School until 1957. He then became the first principal of Wilson Junior High School and retired in 1970.

He also was a member of the Yakima Kiwanis Club and a past president of the Kamikin Kiwanis Club. He had been a longtime farmer and orchardist and had cleared and developed lands in Badger Pocket, Grandview and Pomona. He also was a builder and inventor of farm equipment.

Survivors include his wife, Jean, of Yakima; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Larry Hagen of Anchorage, Alaska; one son, Stanley D. McKenzie of Rochester, NY; four grandsons and one great grandson, and two sisters, Eleanor McGrath and Margaret Harrel, both of Ellensburg. He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m., Monday at First Presbyterian Church of Yakima. Burial will be at Terrace Heights Memorial Park, Yakima. Family requests remembrances to Union Gospel Mission, in Yakima, or the First Presbyterian Church's Camp Ghormley or its building fund. The family will receive visitors at Keith & Keith Funeral Home, 902 West Yakima Avenue, Yakima, from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
