*Was in the War of 1812; died of pleurisy.

Col William Martin was the son of Brigadier General Joseph Martin b. 18 Sep 1740 in Louisa Co. VA, and Sarah Lucas b. 1749/50 d. 1775/1781 of smallpox; he had the following siblings: Susannah Martin who m. Jacob Burrus; Elizabeth who married Carr Waller; Brice who married Matilda Perkins; Mary who married Daniel Hammock, Martha who married William Cleveland, and Nancy who married Archelaus Hughes.

He married on 19 Jul 1790 in Henry Co., VA, Francis Farriss (Ferris) b. 30 Jan 1771, d. 27 Jul 1831 in Dixon Springs, Smith Co., TN (buried at this cem.); they had the following children: Joseph A. b. 1792 in SC; Elizabeth Betsy b. 13 Aug 1793 who married Henry Brooks; George b. 8 Dec 1794 in SC; Sarah b. 1799 in Smith Co., TN m. John Hughes; Brice Ferriss Martin b. 1800 in Smith Co., TN m. Susannah T. Cayce; Jacob b. 1802 in Smith Co., TN; Norval D. b. 1811 in Smith Co., TN d. Jan 1837 in Dixon Springs, Smith Co., TN; William L. Jr. b. 1804 in Smith Co., TN, married Emily Allicorn and Sarha S. Greer; Thomas J. b. 1806 in Smith Co., TN, d. 18 Aug 1833 in Smith Co., TN; and Wilson Yandell b. 1810 in Smith Co., TN, who married Mary Ballard Bridgewater.

Wisconsin State Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin - has in their draper manuscripts collection, letters written by Col. William Martin. Living in 1840's in forest home, near Pontotoc, Fulton Co. Tenn. died near Dixon's Springs, Smith Co., Tenn. Nov. 4, 1846. They have a older tin type picture of him.
