Jennie Marie Walton Sharpe Batts, 85 of Springmoor Life Care Community. She was born the daughter of the late Charles Needham Walton who died in 1965 and Carrie Beebe Walton who died in 1971.
On June 8, 1942, she married Jesse Marvin Sharpe, who died December 19, 1961. On February 19, 1983 she married Lonnie C. Batts, who died January 1998.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Mrs. Batts was preceded in death by her sister, Bernice Blair and brother, Clayborn Walton.
She was a member of Edenton Street Methodist Church since 1943 and was a faithful member of the Fidelis Class, the Cokesbury-Isley Class, and the United Methodist Women's Emmie Rogers Wade Fellowship.
Mrs. Batts attended Bethel Woman's College and Lambuth College before earning her Batchelor of Arts degree from Kentucky's Bowling Green University in 1932. She furthered her education at NCSU, East Carolina University, and UNC-Chapel Hill.
As a lifelong educator and business woman, she began her teaching career at Roanoke Rapids High School 1932-41. Then working for Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association 1941-43. Moving to Raleigh in 1943 she worked for NC Treasury Department. She continued as an educator at Needham B. Broughton High School in 1943-44. Then began teaching at Hardbarger's Business College under the founder/owner, Miss Chase Hardbarger 1944-50. She returned to Broughton High School from 1950-60 where she headed the business department and was the school's bookkeeper. She began working full-time at HBC in 1960 as principal and co-owner of Hardbarger's Business College until she retired in 1974. She continued to work periodically at HBC until 1987.
During her lifetime she was a professional member and held various offices in the National and NC Association of Business Schools, National Secretaries Association, Business and Professional Women's Club, and Alpha Iota Business Sorority. She participated in various civic organizations such as the Woman's Club of Raleigh, a Friendship Force Ambassador and host, and member of several bridge clubs. She drew great pleasure from her Emerald Isle beach cottage and traveling the world.
Surviving is her daughter, Carolyn Marie Sharpe of Raleigh; Billie Stuart Batts of Farmville, VA; along with a number nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her steadfast devotion to her family, friends, and professional endeavors. She cared deeply for others, upholding the standards associated with doing one's best in whatever pursuits one chooses.
