Shirley Adele Smith, 80, of New Kensington, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2013, in Gehr Hall at Concordia, with her family by her side. She was born Nov. 9, 1932, in New Kensington, daughter of Olive Russell and Elizabeth E. (Gregory) Faith. Shirley had lived in the New Kensington area most of her life and had worked for Allegheny Valley Hospital, retiring in 1987. She was a 50-year member of the Springdale Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and the first female paramedic in the city of Lower Burrell. She was the EMS coordinator for Braeburn Fire Company and a life member and secretary for Lower Burrell No. 3 Fire Company. Shirley loved her family dearly and enjoyed gardening and cooking, especially baking and decorating cakes. She had taken a culinary class at a local community college and enjoyed experimenting with foods, sometimes surprising herself and her family with the results. She devoted her life to helping others. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Smith; a son, Robert A. Smith; and 10 brothers and sisters. Survivors include daughter, Kimberly A. Biondi, of New Alexandria; son, Kevin L. (Karen) Smith, of Upper Burrell; daughter, Kelly S. Smith, of Greensburg; and daughter, Cheryl L. (David) Litz, of Sarver; five grandchildren, Thomas Pierce and Anthony Pierce, both of Lower Burrell, Christopher Pierce, of Tarentum, Justin Wroblewski, of Arlington, Tenn., and Jessica Wroblewski, of Sarver; and 10 great-grandchildren. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the FRANK F. GIGLER FUNERAL HOME, 2877 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell, PA 15068, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with Pastor Cletus Hull, of Trinity United Christian Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park in Lower Burrell. Lower Burrell No. 3 members will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lower Burrell No. 3 Ambulance Service, 3255 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell, PA 15068.
