My great-grandfather -
Richard West was the first-born son of Franklin Pierce and Nancy Ella Brewer West. He had a brother, John West, and a sister, Ruth E. West, who died as an infant.
Richard, who we lovingly called Daddy Dick, was a farmer for most of his life. He was also an excellent shot, and could shoot a squirrel (wah!) out of a tree. He was 1/2 Cherokee. Dawes Roll #15743, Miller Roll #28900
My memories of him are vague. He was in his early 90's by the time I was old enough to realize who he was. I remember him sitting outside in his old metal lawn chair on the north side of the house, facing east. Behind him was his homemade, barn red tool shed. He always wore a copper bracelet for his health.
I truly wish I could have known him earlier.
He is the father of my dear Aunt Lucy West and my Grandpa Jack West, with wife Mattie Vandalee Jones West. When she passed away, he married Sarah Arvella Love and they had three more boys, Frank West, Mitchell West and Clem West.
He made his family promise to bury him in a wooden coffin, like his father. He also insisted that he not be embalmed. He is buried next to Spring Frog in the Briartown Cemetery.
Rest in peace, Daddy Dick.
