Birth: 1840
Tennessee, USA
Death: Oct. 13, 1873
Lake County
California, USA

After William was born, his family moved to Ray County, Missouri. In 1861, he came to California with the Harriman Wagon Train, accompanied by his grandparents and other family members. He settled in Lake County for a short time. and then moved on to Oregon and joined the Oregon Volunteers Militia. William married Annie Laurie Saylor, and they had two sons, John and Daniel. They moved to Missouri for awhile, and then back to Kelseyville, Lake, CA in 1873, bringing his parents John and Emma Kelsay with them. William died from tuberculosis soon after. The epitaph written on William's tombstone read: "The poor, the oppressed leave lost a friend. The noblest work of God, an honest man.

This memorial was created based on the following information:

'Emma wanted to be buried as near to her son 'John' as she could. At the time of her death the old cemetery had been abandoned, and some of the bodies had been removed. To comply as nearly as possible with her wishes, her husband bought a piece of land about 18 feet square from Mr. Steele, which was in the corner of his ranch about 1/3 mile directly south of the old cemetery. Here she was buried in 1897. Her husband was buried beside her in 1908. Since then, the roads have been built, and now their graves are at the road intersection'.
(Mauldin History pg. 35-line 18).'

Used with permission from Anita Crabtree, coordinator for Lake County, CA GenWeb

It is believed that the son mentioned in the Mauldin History should read 'William', not John.
