Charles Harrison Hinkle was the son of Peter Hinkle and his wife, Susanna Zinck, who were among the early settlers of this community. It was on the old Hinkle homestead, less than a mile northeast of West Salem, where the deceased was born Dec. 5, 1840.

No doubt in view of the fact that the deceased was born a month after William Henry Harrison was elected president of the United State, he received as one of his names, Harrison.

When more than three years old he, with five of his brothers and sisters, were baptized by Bro. Martin Houser on the occasion of his first visit to West Salem. This was also at the meeting at which the Moravian church of West Salem was organized, which meeting no doubt was held in the Hinkle home or barn.

In his boyhood he became a communicant member of the Moravian church by confirmation, which membership he has faithfully maintained up to the time of his departure.

On Nov. 6, 1862, he was married to Maria Hedrick, the surviving widow. One child, Lucy A. Hinkle, was born, who also survives.

Some time after the death of his father, deceased came into possession of the old homestead, where he has lived to the time of his death.

He enjoyed good health for his age, being able to attend to his accustomed work and the services of the church. Seemingly for some time he felt a premonition that his days were closely numbered, which feeling he conveyed to friends, but kept them from members of his family that they should not feel needlessly anxious about him.

On Monday afternoon, about four o'clock, while working in the garden he suddenly, without any warning that the end of his earthly life was so near, fell to the ground, as the result of heart failure. Neighbors and friends carried him into his home, but it was all too plain that the summons to the better world had come. The time of his earthly pilgrimage was 76 years, seven months, and four days.

He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife; a daughter; a grandchild; three brothers, namely Jacob Hinkle of Mattoon, Frank Hinkle of West Salem, and Francis Hinkle of Mayview, Wash.; and a sister, Lora, wife of Permina Rothrock of St. Claud, Fla.

Funeral services were conducted at the home and at the Moravian church by the pastor, the Rev. Albert P. Haupert, on Wednesday forenoon at 10 o'clock. The church was crowded with relatives and friends.

The body was interred on the family lot in the Moravian Cemetery.
