Riley James Vanderpool, 78, 3342 Avenue B, died Monday at a local hospital after a short illness. He was born at Hamburg and had resided most of his life in Council Bluffs. He retired in 1963 as a steam fitter for the Union Pacific Railroad after 45 years with the company. Vanderpool was a member of First Baptist Church where he served at one time as a Sunday School Teacher, was a member of Excelsior Lodge 259 AF and AM; Tangler Shirine; York Rite Bodies; and was a past worthy patron of Harmony Chapter, 25, Order of Eastern Star. His first wife, Lillian died in January 1967. He and his second wife, Naomi M., observed their 10th wedding anniversary May 3. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Dan (Jean) Griffen of Ames; son James R. Vanderpool of Omaha; stepson, William R. Page of Bellevue, Neb.; stepdaughter, La Verne Clabaugh of Council Bluffs; 26 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; a brother, Clyde Vanderpool of Diamond City, Okla.; and a sister, Hazel Hackbarth of Port Orchard, Wash. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Cutler Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Nelson, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate. Graveside Masonic rites will be conducted by Excelsior Lodge at Cedar Lawn Cemetery. The casket will be closed at the beginning of the service. (Council Bluffs Nonpareil, Tuesday 7/21/1981)
