Peterstown, WV – Ellen Mae Munsey Griggs, 82, of Peterstown was welcomed by her heavenly Father on Sunday, June 23, 2013. Ellen was born in Rhodell, WV, the daughter of the late Daniel Hubert and Tula Mae Lowe Munsey. She is predeceased by her brothers, Robert, Bill, Junior and Lawrence Munsey, her sister-in-law Gaye Griggs and her mother and father in law, Vivian and "Red" Griggs. Ellen's earliest years were spent as a child in the coal fields of WV. Later, her dad ceased to be a coal miner and purchased a working farm in Dry Pond, WV and that farm was the center of the Munsey family for decades. As the children had children and the family grew, robust Sunday dinners there were a regular affair. Ellen was Valedictorian of the Class of '48 at Peterstown High School and in 1949 she married the love of her life, Carvel Lee Griggs with whom she shared her life for 64 years. They made their home in Peterstown and thanks to Ellen's unique gift of caring and taking care of others became a vital part of the community. Born with a servant's heart, Ellen ministered regularly to the sick and shut-ins in the town and county. She carried out those duties by delivering meals, driving countless folks to doctor's appointments, and spending many a night in the hospital with an ailing friend or neighbor. She was a living example of generosity of spirit. Ellen was an active member of Peterstown Baptist Church for decades, and made sure her girls were reared in the church. In later years, she returned to the church of her youth, Red Sulphur Springs Church. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Peterstown Woman's Club. Ellen worked for many years as manager of Carden Maytag, subsequently at Allen's Furniture, and was the bookkeeper and tax-preparer for many local businesses and entities. She was quite smart and uniquely gifted at math. Ellen suffered from a massive stroke in 1988, miraculously survived it and returned to a full and vibrant life; however, she had another serious stroke in 2008 from which she never fully recovered. Ellen's life is a testament of Christian service and it is her truest legacy. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown, WV. Entombment will follow in the Birchlawn Abby, Pearisburg, VA. Friends may call from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, June 27, 2013 at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown, WV. In lieu of Flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Red Sulphur Church, Rt. 1 Box 14, Peterstown, WV 24963.
