World War II United States Army General. Born in Chatfield, Texas. He served in a variety of cavalry assignments during the interwar period. Early in World War II he was sent to Britain where he worked with the Combined Operations Staff. In November 1942 Major General Truscott led the Northern Attack Group in the assault of Morocco. During the Italian campaign he led the 3rd Division at Salerno, Cassino and Anzio. He replaced General John Lucas as head of the 6th Corps and led the troops that entered Rome on June 4, 1944. He directed planning and training for the invasion of Southern France by the 7th Army. Lt. General Truscott replaced General Mark Clark at commander of the 5th Army on December 16, 1944. He succeeded General George Patton as 3rd Army commander and military governor of Bavaria in September 1945.
