Robert Graham Bell, with his twin sister Margaret Cecelia, were the second children of the seven born to William and Adaline nee Taliaferro Bell. His father was lost at sea when he was almost 15; his mother re-married, to widower Joseph Hollingsworth.

Robert served in the Union Army during the Civil War, with the Illinois Company E, 10th Infantry Regiment, entering on 30 Aug 1861 and mustering out on 4 Jul 1865. Five years later, on 29 Sep 1870, he married Ella Titherington at Oquawka in Henderson County.

Robert and Ella had five children: Ivan Graham, Armond, Jessie, Don Cameron, and Clara Adaline. The middle three children are buried next to their parents in the family plot.

By 1880 he and Ella had moved to Galva, where he worked for the railroad, and remained there until their deaths.
