On Tuesday morning of last week, our people were shocked and pained when news reached them that Mrs. John D. Thompson had drowned herself at their home in the southeast part of town, between five and six o'clock.

Mr. and Mrs. Thompson arose about five o'clock and Mr. Thompson went to the barn to feed and left her making preparations to get breakfast. On his return to the house, he discovered her shoes near the cistern and upon investigating, he found the body in the cistern. He immediately notified some of the neighbors and made preparations to take the body out, which was done as soon as assistance arrived.

Mrs. Thompson had not been well for some months, and at times her mind seemed to be affected. No doubt it was one of these spells came upon her, when she took her own life.

Clara May Thompson, daughter of J. Addison Hedrick and his wile, Sarah Louise Rothrock, was born about a mile north of West Salem on January 28, 1865.

She became a communicant member of the former English Moravian Church March 30, 1890, in which fellowship she continued until the time of her death.

On May 23, 1900, she became the wife of John D. Thompson, in which marriage, one son, Herman Bruce, was born.

In her married life she manifested a helpful and industrious disposition. During the last five years she did not enjoy good health, suffering much from periodic attacks of mental depression, which caused her much anguish and to those nearest to her much anxiety.

She died on Tuesday morning, November 23, aged 55 years, 9 months and 25 days.

She leaves to mourn her untimely departure, a husband; mother; 4 brothers; 2 sisters; one son; and three step-sons.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon of last week, Nov. 24, by the Rev. Albert P. Haupert. The remains were laid to rest at the Moravian Cemetery.
