He was born Dec. 6, 1903, in Livingston County, and was raised and educated in Howell, graduating from Howell High School in 1922.
He graduated with honors from the Detroit Institute of Technology as president of his class in 1929, receiving his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering.
He moved to Midland in 1930. He married the former Ruth B. Campbell, June 14, 1938, in Decatur, Ill.; she died Nov 24, 1977. He was employed by the Dow Chemical Co. for 39 years, retiring in 1968 as superintendent of the instrument department.
He was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church, was chairman of the board of the Happy Diners and was active in the Senior Center at the Midland Community Center.
He was a life member of the Instrument Society of America, a life member and past master of Centre Lodge No. 273 of the Free and Accepted Masons and a member of the Royal Arch Masons.
He was formerly active in the Midland County Sportsman's Club, the Midland Rifle Club and the Midland Camera Club. He was an avid traveler and a member of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International.
He leaves sons Richard R. Briggs and James E. Briggs, both of Midland; and four grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Wilson Miller Funeral Home with Dr. Kirk A. Hudson officiating. Burial will be in Midland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
A masonic memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
