Emma was the oldest of five children born to Russell Owens 'R.O.' and Elizabeth Ann (Harper) Bean. She married Benjamin Franklin Smith in 1878 and they had five children: Alice M., Nettie Servina, Mable Francis, Hazel and Anna Maude.

EMMA J. SMITH, 81, DIES SATURDAY OF INFLUENZA
Mrs. Emma J. Smith, 81, a resident of Bridger and vicinity since 1906, died Saturday noon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. W. Rogers after a three week illness of influenza and complications.
Funeral services were held Monday at two o'clock at the home of the deceased here in Bridger, with Miss Nellie Williams of Billings in charge of the funeral services. The Martin Funeral Home of Red Lodge was in charge of burial arrangements. Interment was in the Bridger cemetery. Pallbearers were Walter Schenck, Harry Peterson, John Kujath, John Riley, Hiram Young, and Claude Lida.
A mixed choir composed of the members of the church group of which Mrs. Smith was a member sang 'Alone with God,' and Mrs. Walter Schenck and Miss Williams sang 'Safe In The Arms of Jesus.' Mrs. N. J. Engelhardt accompanied at the organ for both numbers.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. Anna Babcock of Billings and Mrs. Mabel Brown of Washington D.C.; three brothers and one sister, Jordan N. Bean of Bridger, Milton Bean of Monida, M.S. Bean of Warren, and Mrs. Nettie Crawshaw of Forsyth; nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, besides a large number of nephews and nieces.
Emma Jane was born November 7, 1856 to Mr. and Mrs. Russell O. Bean near Leesville, Texas, where the family continued to reside until she was 17 years old. At that time a move was made to what was then Indian Territory. The country soon became to crowded however, for Mr. Bean, and new frontiers were found in Colorado. While at Animas City, Colorado the deceased met and married B. F. Smith, on March 18, 1878, to which union five daughters were born, two of which, Mrs. Nettie Sears and Mrs. Alice Zieter, preceded her in death.
In 1890 Mr. and Mrs. Smith decided to move on to Montana, where her parents had moved a few years previous. Settlement was finally made on Rosebud Creek near Forsyth. The entire trip from Texas to Montana was made in a prairie schooner.
In 1906 Mrs. Smith purchased a place three miles south of Bridger, where she and her daughters lived until 1918 when they moved into Bridger where she resided until death.
