BOBBIE JEAN BAKER Bobbie Baker, 57, Independence, MO, peacefully passed away following a 33 year, and her third courageous battle against cancer on June 10, 2005, at her home. A memorial service celebrating her life will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 18 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel; burial of ashes in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Donations in Bobbie's name may be made to St. Luke's Hospice, or any charity of choice. Bobbie, the firstborn of four children, was born in Independence, MO, on December 23, 1947, to Robert and Helen Murphy. Bobbie lived in the Independence area most of her life with the exception of a few years spent in Toledo, OH, where her son Brandon was born in 1972. She also lived for a short time in her beloved Colorado surrounded by Aspen trees. Bobbie graduated from Southeast High School in 1965 and worked in the Kansas City Public Library for a short time after that. After recovering from her first cancer battle, Bobbie enrolled in the University of Missouri at Kansas City and earned her BA degree in American Literature and Physicology. In 1979, Bobbie went to work for the Internal Revenue Service where she spent a 26 year career in various management and mail analysis positions at the Kansas City Submission Processing Center. There she endeared herself to all who crossed her path, and spent many extra hours at work telling her personal story to advance the cause of early cancer detection and treatment to her colleagues. She also was awarded many honors, including Handicapped Woman of the Year, the ABWA Woman of the year, and received credentials for Certified Mail & Systems Management, a National honor from the IRS that only 280 people have received. Bobbie was a member of the Laureate Delta Psi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi where she held many offices and leadership positions, including Chapter President in 2003-2004, and Woman of the Year for that same period. Bobbie was preceded in death by her father Robert, her beloved brother Michael Murphy, and her cherished nephew David Biggers. She is survived by son Brandon, Kansas City, KS; mother Helen Murphy, Independence, MO; sisters Joyce Biggers, Overland Park, KS, and Marilyn Hayes (Randy), Peoria, IL. Also surviving are one niece, one nephew, one great-nephew, an uncle, aunts, cousins, and a host of friends who love and will miss her very much. Bobbie was an inspiration to everyone that knew her. Her friends, and there were so many, adored her as she was our rock and gave us hope. Her strength and courage were contagious and her sense of humor will be our favorite memory. (Arr. D.W.
