MRS. LENA HAMMES DIES JULY 25
Mrs. Constant (Lena Mary) Hammes, 96, of Sigourney died July 25 at the Sigourney Care Center. She was born June 18, 1889 south of Talleyrand, the daughter of Frank and Katherine Lutz Vogel. She spent her childhood and was educated in the Clear Creek community. She was married to Constant Hammes Feb. 22, 1911 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic church at Clear Creek. They farmed and lived in the Clear Creek community until moving to Sigourney in 1953. Mr. Hammes died Feb. 27, 1978.
Surviving are four sons, Norbert of Fairfield, Paul of Keota, Charles of Marion and Robert of Delta; three daughters, Mrs. Francis (Marcella) Schneider of Oxford, Mrs. Kenneth (Kathryn) Krier of Ollie and Mrs. Paul (Mary) Webb of Sigourney; 42 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl Vogel of Keota; two sisters, Margaret Hammen of Fort Dodge and Mary Dehner of Wenatchee, Wash.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Andrew, Jacob, Mike, Frank, Lawrence, Leo and Joe; five sisters, Elizabeth Dumont, Matilda Allar, Katherine Vogel, Regina Vogel and an infant sister; two sons, Orville and an infant Eldred and one daughter, Clarissa in infancy.
Funeral services were held July 27 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with Msgr. Edward Greer officiating along with the Rev. David Wilkening of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Bloomfield. Rosary was held July 26 at 8:00 p.m. at the Holm Funeral Home in Sigourney. Burial was in Ss. Peter and Paul cemetery at Clear Creek.
Casket bearers were James Hammes, John Schneider, Richard Krier, Russell Hammes, Daniel Hammes, Edward Webb, James Krier and Duane Hammes. Lector was Bernard Vogel. Altar boys were Jeff Weber, Chris Webb and Allen Goody. Music was by Sharon Peiffer, organist and Mrs. Phyllis Hammes, soloist.
