Roswell was the oldest of nine children born to Lester and Huldah (Humphrey) Boyd. He sometimes went by "R. H. Boyd."

His earliest years were spent in Chelsea and Tunbridge, Vermont. As a young man he bought a farm in Cornish, New Hampshire and his family moved there.

In various online records, Roswell's profession was listed as either a tinsmith or plumber. In the 1880 census he was shown boarding in the same Windsor residence as his future wife.

On February 19, 1881, he married Flora M. Morrison. They had three children, one of whom died young. The family lived at 1 Front St. in Windsor.

Roswell drew cartoons, was an alto player for the Windsor band, and a member of the All Souls Unitarian Church.
