Col. Kuhlmann was born in Byron on Nov. 22, 1929, to Sophus and Jennie Kuhlmann of Byron. He graduated from Byron High School, attended Rochester Junior Collage and the University of Minnesota, and later received his bachelor's degree from Arizona State University.
In 1949, he joined the United States Air Force. He attended flight training, was Commissioned, and received his Wings in 1951. He flew 100 combat missions in the Korean War and served two tours in the Vietnam War. He retired in Austin, Texas, and later moved to Flagstaff.
He is survived by his son, Lee Kuhlmann; brothers, Col. Duane Kuhlmann of Spanish Fort Ala., Hugh Kuhlmann of Rochester, and Lyle Kuhlmann of Lake City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife, Bea.
There will be a private burial in the Byron Cemetery at a later date.
