John E. McCauley was born on the January 1, 1876, son of Alexander S. and Mary Bridges McCauley from Bates, Greenville County, South Carolina. John was one of twelve children.

In 1905, John married Miss Mamie E. Service the daughter of Robert Forest Service and Lula Barnhill Service of Gaffney, South Carolina. Their wedding was held at the Limestone Presbyterian Church in Gaffney, South Carolina.

Soon after the wedding they moved to Travelers Rest, South Carolina. There they started a family which included:
James Raymond McCauley (1903– 1975)
Sarah Gladys McCauley Jamison (1904 – 1996)
Broadus McCauley (1906 – 1979)
Faye McCauley Baughman (1911 – 1988)
Robert Forest McCauley (1913 – 2000)
Paul Samuel McCauley (1915 – 2010)

John McCauley departed this life on March 15th 1945 at the age of 69 years, 2 months and 14 days. He was laid to rest in Ebenezer Baptist Churchyard cemetery.
