Alfonso M. "Mickey" Espinosa was born in Tucson on February 2, 1925. Son of Antonio and Carmen Espinosa, preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mercedes Montano Espinosa.
Mickey grew up in Tucson and attended Tucson High School. A life-long baseball fan, his love of the sport started at a young age as a batboy earning him the nickname "Mickey" and in 1937 he was part of a crew of "little fellers" making up a team known as the "Star Cowboys" organized by Vic Thornton. He went on to play as a member of the City Championship Azteca baseball team and the Sunset Dairy City league championship basketball team.
During the Second World War he served overseas in the Pacific campaign for more than two years with the Americal Division. On April 14, 1945, during an attack on enemy positions in Cebu several of our men were killed and one officer and one enlisted man were wounded. At great risk to his life Sgt. Espinosa went directly into enemy fire and dragged the wounded men to safety. He was awarded the Bronze Star for saving the lives of the two wounded men.
After the war Mickey worked for Safeway Stores Inc. for over 40 years beginning his career as a clerk. He was quickly promoted to manager and went on to manage many of the original stores in Tucson.
Mickey passed away peacefully June 12, 2013 and is survived by his children, Yolanda Gabrhel (William), Graciela Lowther (Dan), Norma MacDonald (Christopher), Marco Antonio Espinosa (Mung), Christina Garcia, preceded in death by Michael Albert Espinosa and Christina Espinosa.
Services will be held Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Santa Cruz Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Alex Gabrhel Endowed Scholarship fund at Salpointe Catholic High School. Arrangements by DESERT ROSE, HEATHER CREMATION AND BURIAL.
