Religious leader. In 1959 he graduated from Weber High School. He was of the Mormon faith and served a mission to Nauvoo. He worked as a real estate developer and lobbyist for the Reagan Administration. About 1991 he and his wife Elaine created a makeshift altar to facilitate otherworldly communication. They said God eventually told them that the current "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" (LDS) church was among the 'wrong' churches and they should start their own". In 1994 he claimed to have a revelation in which the keys of the Melchizedek priesthood were conferred upon him. Following this event, in response to a perceived apostasy, he founded a breakaway sect called the "True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Last Days" (TLC) which was formally organized on May 3, 1994 and is headquartered in Manti, Utah. An early setback for the church occurred in 1998 when 2 disaffected members accused Harmston of racketeering and fraud when they failed to see Jesus. He had a history of heart complications, but his death came suddenly at age 72 from a heart attack on Thursday at Sanpete Valley Hospital.
