PORTER, Dr. Carlton (Carl) Ellis, of Palmdale passed from this life on September 30, 2007, at the age of 87 after a long and productive life. He was born June 20, 1920, in Tully, New York, the son of Charles and Daisy Porter. The second of four brothers. The family moved to Long Beach, California when Carl was 7 years old. During World War II, he served in both the Army from 1941-1944, and the Army Air Corps from 1944-1946. He met his first wife Carolyn Wester during this time in the air traffic control tower in Albuquerque. He trained as a doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM), graduating from Oklahoma State University in 1954. Returning to California, he spent his career as a veterinarian of large animals for Los Angeles County in Palmdale. A lifelong learner, Dr. Porter also earned a Masters Degree in Public Health with an emphasis in epidemiology as well as a real estate license. In 1999, Carl was blessed to marry again to Polly Wright after his first wife Carolyn died in 1997. In addition to his professional career, Carl was well-known in the Palmdale community for his devoted service to the Palmdale United Methodist Church, where he was a member for 50 years. He was also active with Friends of the Palmdale Public
Library, Red Cross, Sheriffs Boosters, and the Antelope Valley Board of Trade. He had a lifelong interest in aviation, and greatly enjoyed the American frontier books of Louis L'Amour. He was also an amateur inventor, holding several patents. He was always curious in how things fit together, and ready with a suggestion for how they could be improved. Carl was famous and well-loved among family and friends for his sweet tooth. He is survived by his wife Polly; brother Bernard and wife Dorothea, brother Stanley and wife Lorraine; son Ellis and wife Gayle; son John and wife Susan, daughter Catherine and husband Davis; step-daughter Kandis and husband Larry, step-daughter Priscilla and husband Bob, step- daughter Felicia and husband Freddy, and step-son Steve; five grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at the Palmdale United Methodist Church, 39055 10th Street West in Palmdale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carlton Porter Memorial Fund of the Palmdale United Methodist Church or to the Red Cross.
