Born Gwen Goldberg, actress Gwen Welles was the daughter of actress Rebecca Weis Welles and Barton Goldberg; her sisters were Elizabeth (Betsy) Goldberg Welles and Lori Yarum.

Gwen graduated from University High School in Los Angeles, California and attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York; it was during this time that she began to appear in various projects, catching the attention of directors such as Robert Altman.

Ms. Welles may be best remembered for her portrayal of talentless singer Sueleen Gay in Robert Altman's 1975 film 'Nashville'. A pivotal point in the film is when Ms. Welles' character realizes that she has not been asked to a professional audition but, rather, to a stag party as the entertainment. (I personally chose to put this page online for Ms. Welles because, as a fan, I found her work in "Nashville" both memorable and heartbreaking). The role brought her a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She would also appear in several films directed by Henry Jaglom, among them, New Year's Day (1989) and Eating (1990).

Gwen died in 1993 from anal cancer, aged 42; she had turned down all conventional means of treatment for the disease. Her husband, actor Harris Yulin, survived her, among other family members. (Her younger sister, Elizabeth [Betsy Goldberg Welles] would die from colon cancer 10 years later).

Director Donna Deitch was the guiding force behind a documentary about Welles' illness in 1992, "Angel On My Shoulder" which appeared at the 1998 Berlin Film Festival; in the documentary footage, both Donna and Gwen address one another as best friends, making Ms. Deitch's project, no doubt, a labor of love.
