Almon James Sparling, Sr was born in 1810 in New York. He was living in China, Genesee County, NY in 1830. He married Sophrona Dennis about 1832. The family moved from New York to Ohio, and at some point, must have went back to New York briefly, before again moving to Ohio. The oldest two children were born in New York; the third one, in Ohio; the fourth one, in New York; and the next two in Ohio; and finally, the last one, in Indiana.

By 1845, Almon and the Sparling family, had become one of the early families to settle in the Wabash area of Jay County, Indiana. Almon is mentioned in a book about the history of Jay County as having opened a cooper's shop at that time there. Almon and Sophrona Sparling had seven children: Mary Jane (1834-1910); Louisa (1836-1918); Hannah (1839-1912); Almon James, Jr. (1841-1909); Lyman (1843-1923); Ilona Sophrona (1847-1941); Henrietta (1850-). Almon's wife, Sophrona, died about 1852.

Almon James Sparling, Sr. married Lavina Norris in 1854 in Indiana. By 1860, they and the other members of the family had moved to Dayton, Richland County, Wisconsin where Almon was a farmer and continued to work as a cooper. Almon and Lavina had eight children: Elizabeth (1856-); Ira (1858-1928); Emily Clarana (1860-1936); Sarah Matilda (1861-1932); Almira Jane (1863-1939); James M. (1863-1947); Melissa A, (1866-); and Joseph (1867-1946).
