Asa was born on 18 April 1826 in Marengo County, Alabama to John Nelson & Charlotte Ann “Lettie” (Fulford) Bishop. His father died before he was a year old and Asa went to live with his grandfather, Asa Bishop (1753-1841), before moving to Baldwin County, Alabama where his mother was living with her second husband. He married Martha Ann Andress, daughter of John & Mary (Tinsley) Andress, on 3 April 1857 in Baldwin County. In 1859 they moved to Manatee County, Florida.
Asa was mustered into Confederate service on 25 April 1862 by Major R. B. Thomas at Tampa, Florida as Private in Captain Smith's Company, the Key West Avengers, 7th Regiment Florida Infantry. On 3 April 1864 he was transferred to the C.S. Navy and on 2 June 1864 was assigned to serve on the CSS Spray at St. Mark's, Florida, as an ordinary seaman. He was paroled at St. Mark's, Florida, 12 May 1865.
After the war, Asa lived with his family at their home on Sneed Island, at the mouth of the Manatee River, where he & his descendants were boatmen & fishermen. Asa died on 14 November 1894 at Palma Sola, Manatee County, Florida.
