Actor. He is best remembered for the role of 'Tony Soprano' in the successful HBO cable television series "The Sopranos", which he starred in from 1999 to 2007. After graduating from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he majored in communications, he aspired to become the proprietor of a bar, and, following a period when he worked as a nightclub manager and bouncer, he developed an interest in acting and began taking courses. His break in the industry came with the role of 'Steve Hubbell' in the Broadway theater revival of the Tennessee Williams' play "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1992) and shortly after this experience, he launched his motion picture career in the Sidney Lumet picture "A Stranger Among Us" (1992). Making an impression amongst fans and critics for his role of 'Virgil the Henchman" in Tony Scott's 1993 film "True Romance" (1993), he had several featured movie roles to his credit when he was cast in "The Sopranos" as Tony Soprano, the head of the crime family whom is also coping with a mid-life crisis for which requires regular visits with his therapist. The role would garner him much acclaim, and earned him a Golden Globe Award in 2000. After the series' run ended in 2007, he remained busy in films until his untimely death from an apparent heart attack while in Italy. (bio by: C.S.)
