The son of German immigrants Lawrence Kirchner and Regina Basler, Joseph was born and raised in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri. He was a farmer.

Joseph married Katharina Mueller on 28 Nov 1882 in New Offenburg (Zell), Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri. They were the parents of 8 children, although only 5 were living by the turn of the century.

Two of the Kirchners' daughters, Mary Johanna and Rosa Philomena, became nuns and took their religious vows with the Sisters of the Most Precious Blood.

Joseph's wife, Katharina, died on 20 Jan 1901 at the age of 42.

Children from first marriage: 4 daughters, 2 sons, 2 infants.

After Katharina passed away, Joseph married one of her younger sisters, Louise "Caroline" Mueller on 04 Nov 1907 in Bloomsdale, Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri.
