JAYTON - James Bryan Montgomery, 79, passed away June 23, 2005, at the Texas State Veterans Home in Temple, Texas. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 27, 2005 at Jayton Cemetery with Pastor Mack Cole officiating under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be 3:00 6:00 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2005 at Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home in Rotan.

Jim was born August 11, 1925, in Jayton, Texas, to John Harrison Montgomery, Sr. and Ida Pearl Clark Montgomery. He graduated from Jayton High School in 1943. He served in the South Pacific during World War II as a member of the 3rd Marine Division Pioneer Battalion and in China as a member of the 1st Division Engineer Battalion. After the war, he returned to Jayton and married Sue Fowler on October 8, 1947. Jim served Kent County as a deputy sheriff from 1951-53 and served two terms as sheriff from 1953-1956 and was the youngest sheriff in Texas at the time. During the 1950s he and his brother, John H. Montgomery, Jr., operated Montgomery Brothers Registered Herefords, producing a National Grand Champion and winning many major shows. In 1955, their herd was deemed one of the best in the nation. In addition to cattle raising, Jim and his brother raised cotton, and in 1949 they became the first farmers in Kent County to harvest cotton by mechanical means. Jim also owned Jayton Supply and Furniture. He and his family moved to Midland, Texas, in 1971, and Jim managed convenience stores for Furrs, Inc. He eventually earned a real estate broker's license and owned Jim Montgomery Real Estate, specializing in farm and ranch properties.

He is preceded in death by his wife and daughter Molly.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mark Montgomery of Lewisville and Jeb and Kristy Montgomery of Baytown; a daughter and son-in-law, Meg and Bruce Moring of Georgetown; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Polly Montgomery of Spur; and a grandson, Jared Montgomery.
