Explorer. Born in Ukraine, he graduated from the Navy Cadet Corps in 1786 and was commissioned an officer in the Imperial Russian Navy. In 1803, as the commanding officer of the ship Neva, he was the first Russian to circumnavigate the world completing the journey in 1806. For this feat, he was awarded the Order of Saint Vladimir of 3rd Degree and number of places are named after him to include Lisyanski Island in Hawaii.
