Born in Charleston, her father, an Englighman, died when she was an infant. Along with her mother, she retuned to New York City, and was raised by her Grandparents, the Bantas, a well known Dutch family, desendants of Nathaniel Banta, a Revolutionary War Hero, and Paulus Van der Beek original Founder of Brooklyn. He once owned a farm that went from Park Slope to Coney Island.
