In 1850, he was a young blacksmith living with and/or working for blacksmith Levi Fisher in Londonderry Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. He married Mary Brestle and fathered Samuel B. (b 05/02/54) and Jacob B. (b. 08/19/58), but the family is not found in the 1860 census.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg May 1, 1861, mustered into federal service at Washington DC July 27 as a private with Co. G, 6th Pennsylvania Reserves (35th Pennsylvania Infantry), but discharged by surgeon's certificate October 8, 1862, reason as yet unknown.
