Joseph was the 3rd son of Thomas Pearson and Elizabeth Heckman.

In a letter to Aaron and Nancy (Pearson) Ballard from Thomas and Elizabeth Pearson, Thomas lists Joseph's middle name as "Alben." In the death record for Joseph's son, George William, Joseph's middle name is listed as Allen (Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths, 1916-1947).

Although Joseph was born in Virginia, by 1849 (if not sooner), he was living in Pulaski County, Illinois.
