Sarah Ann Johnson was born December 26, 1842 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois and died at her home in Carbon, Sunday, April 13, 1919, aged 76 years, 2 months, and 17 days. She was married to Patrick Hewitt while in Illinois, September 23, 1860. While fighting for his country, Mr. Hewitt fell in battle about four years after their marriage. Mrs. Hewitt was left with one child, a son, William Hewitt.
On February 14, 1866, she was married to James Sheridan. To this union nine children were born. Three children preceded the mother in death. The deceased children are, Lillie, a nine year old daughter, who died February 13, 1892; Mary Runser, who died September 16, 1909; and the oldest son, William Hewitt, who died September 30, 1917. The living children are as follows: Pete Sheridan, Sarah Bennington, Amanda Hunter, all of Carbon; John Sheridan of Oklahoma; Mark Sheridan of Villisca; ;and Celia Barnett of Red Oak.
Coming to Carbon more than 37 years ago, Mrs. Sheridan knew much about the hardships of the early settlers and bravely did her part to make the home life a good one in which to raise her family. That she was a hard worker, a good neighbor, and a loving mother may be truly said of this aged one. She was a member of the church and when able she attended its services. Her sufferings at times were severe, but she tried to be patient. She leaves to mourn her loss, her aged husband, the children above named, sixteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Harrison and Dolphus Johnson, both of Illinois, besides many friends.
Rev. E. L. Stone of Elliott, assisted Rev. Mr. Johnson, the resident pastor of Carbon, conducted the funeral services, which were held in the M. E. Church at 2 p.m., Tuesday. The sermon was an usually fine discourse-a real message to the living. The floral tributes were beautiful. All the children were present at the funeral, except John Sheridan, of Oklahoma. Mrs. William Hewitt and her daughter, Mrs. Arnold of Massena, and a relative from Creston were present for the funeral. The body was laid to rest in Quincy Cemetery. Sympathy extended to the bereaved family.
