Tom grew up in Watsonville, California, where he was a Past Master Councilor of the International Order of DeMolay. He graduated from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo with a degree in Industrial Engineering and thereafter accepted employment with Varian, Inc., in Palo Alto, California.
Tom was critically injured in a tragic hang-gliding accident on July 4, 1983, in Marina, California, and passed away in the hospital ten days later.
