Albert John Grobe Jr. was born to Albert and Helen Grobe (nee Krefft) in Elmhurst, Ill., on Oct. 22, 1944. He grew up in Itasca, Ill. He worked his way through college as a handyman for Itasca Hardware and as a welder for International Harvester.

Upon earning his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Valparaiso University in 1966, Mr. Grobe worked for General Motors Components Division as a project engineer. His projects included the energy absorbing steering column, which protected the driver's chest by collapsing in the event of a crash, and the "Lock-out" steering column, which deterred theft.

Mr. Grobe transferred from Saginaw, Mich., to Athens in 1976 where he aided in initial production floor layout. He served in various capacities to include laboratory manager and product line manager for Saturn steering columns and plastic injection molding components.

Mr. Grobe also served the local community at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and school as well as the Cullman German Club. At St. Paul's, Mr. Grobe served as PTA president and chairman of the Stewardship and Trustee Committees. He also served as Cullman's Oktoberfest Burgermeister in 2000.

Mr. Grobe passed away on Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at the age of 58 in Cullman Regional Medical Center. His funeral was at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at 11 a.m. with interment in Cullman City Cemetery with Williams-McCracken Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Grobe is survived by his wife, Peggy Gilbreath Grobe; sons, Mark Grobe of Fort Payne and John Grobe and daughter-in-law Jennifer of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, 6-year-old Maddie Grobe and 2-year-old Jake Grobe; and sister, Karen Kroeger of Itasca, Ill.
