Funeral services will be held 2 P.M., Saturday, May 1, 2010 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with Dr. Mike Ruffin officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 Friday evening at the funeral home.
Mrs. Stokes was born August 10, 1914 in Wilcox County to the late James A. and Eura Melvin Christmas. She lived in Fitzgerald most of her life, graduating from Fitzgerald High School in 1931. Mrs. Stokes was a homemaker, a former employee of The Monarch Company and Irwin Mfg and also managed the family farm. She was a member of the First Baptist church where she was a member of Bethany Sunday School Class, the WMU and a former Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Stokes was a former member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. For the past five years she was a resident of the The Harris House.
Mrs. Stokes is survived by her daughters and a son-in-law: Joyce Treece of Fitzgerald and Joan & Rev. Bill Priester of Fayetteville; grandchildren: Kurt & Cindy Treece, Lisa & Mike Smith, Laine & Rick Bellinger, Karen Connell, Joy & David Lamb, Jodi & Michael Pirkle and Jan & Tim Leonard; 15 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Edgar Stokes, baby daughter, Lanelle Stokes, son-in-law, James Treece, 6 brothers and 4 sisters.
