It is believed that Abraham was the son of Engebrecht Olavus Grenager and Andrena Larsdatter of Kristiansand, Vest Agder, Norway.
He married Gunhild Gulbranson about 1876. Gunhild(1857-1892) was the daughter of Gulbran Tostensen and Signe Rasmusdatter (1819-1913). About 1 February 1884 he immigrated to America, a couple of months prior to the rest of his family. He and Gunhild were the parents of Engebrecht Grenager (1877-1919), Signe Grenager (b. circa 1877), Ragnhild Grenager (1879-1956) who married Howard Miller, Gudrun Grenager (1881-1920) who married Vincent Stoltenberg, Sigrid? Grenager? (circa 1883-1892)?, Margot Grenager (1886-1955) who married Fred Johnston, and Dagny Grenager (1890-1959) who married Jesse Ellsworth Douglass.
It is said Gunhild died in a house fire in 1892, and Abraham was left with 5 young children to raise, alone.
Abraham married 2nd, a widow, Anna Nelson 14 March 1901, in Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin. Anna had been previously married to a Mr. Hansen, and had two children, Harry & George Hansen. In 1905, Abraham & Anna Grenager lived in Appleton, Outagamie Co., Wisconsin. On 14 Dec 1905, Abraham was elected President of the DuluthSuperior Chapter (Norrona Lodge #27) of the Sons of Norway. In 1910, they lived in Superior, Wisconsin.
Abraham was trained as a butcher. He worked for a time in a shop on East Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis. The family was associated with the Lutheran Church, later with the Unitarian, and later, perhaps, nothing at all. Circa 1910, he moved to Superior Wisconsin. Around this time he was a liquor manufacturer. Abraham never learned English. At the time of his death, Abraham owned land on Leech Lake (in Lot 4, Sec. 2, Twsp 141, range 31, Cass Co., MN) and also in St. Louis Co., MN (Lots 1 & 2, in sec. 27, & lot 3 in sec. 28, twsp 66, range 17).
