• From the Descendants of Henry Shoaf & Anna Sprecher, Third Edition, Volume 1, page 188:

"Mary Hedrick Shoaf, after coming to Tennessee, lived in the home of her son, William Shoaf, until her death on May 22, 1892. She had a most lovable disposition. Her daughter-in-law said that she was the sweetest and noblest person she ever knew. She was an ideal mother. The influence of her life in her family bore fruit in the strong and excellent character of her children. The following is a notice of her death that appeared in a local paper:
SHOAF - At the residence of her son, Esq. W. A. Shoaf, in District No. 15, near Phelan, on Sunday morning, May 22d, 1892, Mrs. Mary Shoaf, in the seventy-second year of her age.

Mrs. Shoaf was the daughter of George and Elizabeth Hedrick, and was born in Davidson County, NC, May 27th 1815. she was married to Wm. Shoaf, who died in North Carolina, in 1865. They were blessed with six children, who survive them, four sons and two daughters. About twenty years ago Mrs. Shoaf with her children moved to Tennessee, where she lived to the time of her death. She was a woman of great energy and industry. In early life she professed religion and joined the Lutheran Church. She afterwards united with the Methodist Church, where she remained a consistent member until her death; and although debarred by feeble health from attending public worship, yet the faithful discharge of every duty, her daily walk and conversation attested a living and abiding faith in Jesus Christ.

During her last sickness she frequently spoke of her willingness to depart and be with Christ and died in the triumph of a living faith. To her bereaved sons and daughters we would say, "mother, has gone to return no more. You can go to her. Follow her Christian example and meet her in Heaven. A Friend."
