COOKEVILLE — Funeral services for Harold Clifford Allen, 80, of Cookeville, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, from the chapel of Whitson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. today, Thursday, May 16, from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, May 17, and from 10 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Allen passed away today, Thursday, May 16, 2013.
He was born May 10, 1933, in Jackson County to the late Charlie B. and Lela Hardy Allen.
Harold was proud of being the great-great-grandson of William Hardy, who received a 1,000 acre land grant settlement after serving in the Revolutionary War, and rescued and married a Cherokee Indian woman taken from the "Trail of Tears." He was also the great-grandson of Samuel Hardy, who served in the 13th/25th regiment and fought at Shiloh under Nathan Bedford Forrest during the Civil War.
He was married for 60 years to Georgia Evelyn Mitchell Allen.
Harold met his wife, Georgia, while working at the Georgia Boot Company in Cookeville. With the draft coming from the Korean War, he chose to enlist in the Navy in 1952. Harold achieved PO2 (Petty Officer 2nd Class) status and was the first crew to serve on board the USS Forrestal; therefore, he was a "Plank Member."
Harold's first child, Patricia, was born the very day he took the admittance test for the Tennessee Highway Patrol. On this test, he scored the highest in the state of Tennessee. His son, Randal, was born five years later when Harold was a sergeant. Harold was later promoted to lieutenant. He was passionate about teaching safe driving to teenagers in our schools and promoting the use of car seats for infants and children. After being promoted to captain, he served as director of personnel and retired after 34 years of service.
Harold was very blessed to enjoy more than 23 years of retirement with his wife. They enjoyed trips together and were frequently seen about Cookeville having coffee and "serious" discussions with good friends. They also enjoyed helping others.
Harold was a good man. He was baptized at age 57, was a faithful member of the Church of Christ at Holladay, and was always anxious to share the gospel with others. The church and his family were the center of his life.
His family includes his wife, Georgia Evelyn Mitchell; two children and spouses, Patricia and Danny Hall and Randal and Cheryl Allen; three grandchildren and spouses, Stacey and Josh Wells, Andrew and Sarah Hall and Luke Hall; three great-granddaughters, Emma, Addy and Caroline; one dear brother, Charles Ray and wife Linda Allen; and a niece, Amy Smith and husband Michael.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Kathryn; a nephew, Kenny; and a niece, Sonya.
The family would like to express their thanks to the caregivers at NHC Healthcare of Cookeville, for the loving care that was shown to Harold and his family.
Pallbearers will be Tennessee Highway Patrol.
